Large Gap Remains Between Red Sox, Rafael Devers In Extension Talks

Oct 28, 2022 8:44 AM

The Boston Red Sox were unsuccessful in trying to extend the contract of Rafael Devers this spring, but talks will rekindle with the offseason approaching.

Devers is one year from hitting free agency, but the club still wants to lock him up long-term.

According to a report, Boston has offered Devers a deal at or above $200 million but suggests there's still a notable gap between the two sides. The 26-year-old is believed to be seeking a 10-year deal worth at least $300 million.

Justin Verlander 'Just Trying To Be Present' As Free Agency Looms

Oct 28, 2022 8:32 AM

Justin Verlander can become a free agent after the World Series, but he's trying to be present as the Houston Astros try to win a championship.

Verlander's contract comes with a $25 million player option for 2023, granted by virtue of him surpassing 130 innings this season.

"I'm just kind of along for the ride right now," said Verlander, who will start Game 1 against the Philadelphia Phillies. "It's been a wonderful year for me, my family at home and in the sport. I'm just trying to be present and part of it. I'm not really trying to focus too much on what's ahead."

Cardinals Have Met With Nolan Arenado About Opt-Out

Oct 27, 2022 7:49 AM

John Mozeliak told the media that he recently met with Nolan Arenado about the third baseman's looming opt-out.

In addition, Mozeliak pledged that the St. Louis Cardinals' payroll will increase for the 2023 season.

Arenado can opt-out of the remaining five years and $144 million on his contract. Mozeliak indicated there's some optimism regarding a resolution between the two sides.

He could have opted out last season as well, but decided against it and hit .293/.358/.533 with 30 home runs in 620 plate appearances in 2022.

Mariners Claim Luke Weaver Off Waivers From Royals

Oct 27, 2022 7:43 AM

The Seattle Mariners have claimed Luke Weaver off waivers from the Kansas City Royals.

In a corresponding move, outfielder Derek Hill was designated for assignment.

Weaver, 29, was a highly-touted prospect for the St. Louis Cardinals, who drafted him in 2014. He was a key piece of the trade that sent Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Cardinals.

In 2022, Weaver had a 6.56 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings split between the Royals and Diamondbacks.

Dodgers Expected To Pursue Aaron Judge

Oct 25, 2022 8:40 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers will likely be in the mix for Aaron Judge in free agency, according to a report.

The report states that the Dodgers' interest in Judge could be tied to the willingness of Mookie Betts to move from right field to second base to accommodate Judge.

L.A. had a luxury tax payroll just under $290 million in 2022 and will see significant salary come off the books this offseason thanks to the possible impending free agencies of David Price, Trea Turner, Justin Turner and Craig Kimbrel.

Aaron Judge Hasn't 'Even Thought About Next Step'

Oct 24, 2022 8:24 AM

Aaron Judge will be a free agent after the conclusion of the World Series, but he wasn't ready to think about his future moments after the Houston Astros completed a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

In the hours before Opening Day, Judge declined a seven-year contract offer from the Yankees that would have paid him $213.5 million from 2023 to 2029.

He went on to hit an AL record 62 home runs, thereby increasing his value.

"That's all going to run through my agent. I haven't even thought about the next step yet," Judge said. "But like I said, we've got time to figure it out."

Judge sounded wistful when he took a moment to describe his six-year career in pinstripes.

"Getting the chance to wear the pinstripes and play right field at Yankee Stadium, it's an incredible honor that I definitely didn't take for granted at any point," he said. "I always checked myself pregame, when I'd say a little prayer, I'd kind of look around the stadium and kind of pinch myself that there's very few individuals that get a chance to run out on that field and do that and play in front of the fans that support us throughout my whole six years here. It was a special time. I just kick myself for not bringing home that championship for them."

The Seattle Mariners are looking to improve further after authoring a 90-72 season, their best mark since 2003, and advancing to the ALDS.

Jerry Dipoto said his "great preference" this offseason "would be to land a shortstop that would like to play second base."

There are four star shortstops that are expected to be free agents next month -- Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Dansby Swanson and Trea Turner.
